About the Pastor
Calvary Chapel is affiliated with Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa California and the ministry of Pastor Chuck Smith. Pastor J.D. served at Calvary Costa Mesa for fifteen years, during which God gave him a great love for His Word and the simple style of verse by verse teaching through the bible. God used the ministry at Calvary Costa Mesa to grow Pastor J.D. in the Word and prepare him for eventual full time ministry. For ten years, Pastor J.D. served as a worship leader. In 1989 J.D. and his wife Delene joined a worship ministry called the Worship Community. Later J.D. would lead the group which was his first pastor type position. It was during this season with the Worship Community that God began to move upon his heart to "Shepherd the flock of God which is among you".
In 1999 God led Pastor J.D. and his family to Texas where he later planted a Calvary Chapel near Austin. In 2006 God led them to Houston where he now serves as the full time senior pastor at Calvary Chapel Houston Metro.
About Teaching God’s Word
In Acts Chapter 6 the apostles were overwhelmed with the administration of daily food distribution to the needy people in the church. And they called a meeting together of all the believers in the church and said “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program.” So they gave the order to find other men “respected and full of the Spirit and wisdom” to take over the administration of food and said “Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.” Our mandate hasn’t changed and the main focus of Calvary Chapel today continues to be “prayer and teaching the word”.
Our approach to “teaching the word” is a verse by verse teaching through entire books of the bible. The Apostle Paul said to the church “I have not failed to declare to you the whole counsel of God.” – Acts 20:27
About Living God’s Word
James wrote in his letter to the church – “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.” We recognize that along with the responsibility of teaching God’s word – is doing God’s word. Jesus said “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say”. Jesus likened the person who lives His word as one who has built a house on a rock that the floods could not destroy.
About Spreading God’s Word
Just before His ascension into heaven, Jesus told His disciples “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. - Matthew 28:19 – 20”
Calvary Chapel sends and supports people both locally and internationally who have a calling and passion for spreading God’s Word. Please visit our "missions" page to learn more about Calvary Chapel supported missions.
